CD boot update

Everything is in place now, and the boot loader is even passing all information to the kernel to be able to boot from a CD. It's not yet working though, as the VFS is only evaluating the partition offset of the boot volume, and nothing more.

It's probably only a tiny bit left, so I try to finish it tomorrow - in my spare time, as I usually don't work during the weekend :-)

We have also agreed on not making demo CDs (images only, of course) available before the whole system runs a bit more stable. Compared to a hard disk image, a CD image is likely to be tested by a lot more people - and therefore, the first impression should not be too bad.

Hi Axel,

Hope your new job is treating you OK.

Will the CD boot technique work for booting from USB memory keys or USB hard disks if its supported by the BIOS?

Thanks,

Andrew McCall (Dr3w)

Not really, as the kernel itself must still be able to access the device when it's running - and that's currently not the case for Haiku.

I think USB mass storage devices are emulated as hard drive by the BIOS, so the standard boot mechanism should work (with the same disclaimer as above).

It is very important to have a perfect first impression you are totally right. Dont do images, or give them to developers only.

Thank you for your decission.

Well in that case you can grab all the sources and make your own image!

Remember - this is Open Source Software, you are free to do what you want to do with it.

All the "agreement" means is that there won't be an official Haiku image until the system is more stable, which makes complete sense. Right now you would be re-booting every five minutes or so, which doesn't give the user a good impression and would soon turn potential users away.

I am sure you will see quite a few sites that have unofficial CD images, Philipp Schmid has been posting unofficial images for a few months now.

Thanks,

Yes, but..er... haiku it's not Windows or OsX. :)
I mean..everybody knows haiku is in early stage of development: if someone doesn't understand this point, then he's...umh... a lamer? ;)
So, lamers could turn away from the haiku but a lot of serious users with linespeed problems (downloading the src without DSL is not so easy) could try haiku. Regularly. And maybe could donate for the project.

See http://behaiku.altervista.org/ this site hosts some images since semptember 2005. Today it has 2432 visits... Using a google-search you can't find similar sites...

2432 visits since september... I think beos community really needs images. :)

Don't get me wrong, I am all for hard disk images like these - they are reasonably simple to work with for anyone interested in the progress of Haiku. And I definitely think we should make them available on a regular basis.

But with CD images, I think we should be a bit more restrictive. You would need to burn a CD in order to try it out (or use a boot floppy in an emulator), and it's also something that anyone might get in his fingers.

BTW I am sick, and that's why I don't trying to complete CD booting today (and moving is really time consuming, too).

eh eh ...

Since i've talked with some haiku devs, it seems that a real tester plateform in a big lack for Haiku actually.

So why not making a private forum room for some hard Haiku testers, massively reporting bugs, where you can post, at every step, a new qemu haiku image... ?

And why not generalising this idea for each part of Haiku ?
